Lichen planus is a (non-contagious) inflammatory disease of the skin, nails and mucous membranes (also in vagina), as well as the vulva and penis.
On the skin, the rash usually consists of flat, shiny and itchy, red to light purple, bumps with a network of finely branched white stripes.
The cause is still unknown and it is assumed that it is an autoimmune disorder.

Characteristic of LP is the so-called Koebner phenomenon: a new LP site develops at the site of a skin injury (from scratching, for example).

What do you see?
The inner labia may become smaller or disappear
With LP in the vagina, i.e. on the mucous membrane, there is a red discoloration, where it looks like open wounds are present, and there may be bloody discharge
On the skin of the vulva, shiny and itchy, red to slightly purple, flat bumps with a network of finely branched white streaks may be present.
Is more investigation needed?
LP needs to be treated properly so you should see a doctor with this, preferably one who is experienced in this.
A doctor with experience can recognize LP after listening to your story and conducting a physical examination.
If in doubt, a biopsy may be taken.
How to get rid of it.
LP on the vulva and in the vagina are usually chronic and often difficult to treat.
Treatment with strong corticosteroid ointments usually does provide relief.
In persistent cases that do not respond sufficiently to the ointments, treatment with anti-inflammatories in tablet form may be considered. (preferably in combination with ointments)
